Accessory Trends: Birdcage Veils

We feel so lucky to have connected again with the inspirational, lovely, bubbly and warm Buzz icon–accessory designer Debbie Carlisle, whose headpieces are legendary in the wedding industry. Today we are talking birdcage veils, which have become a key trend for 2023 brides.
First, a quick look back at the history of the birdcage veil – the favoured-by-the-royals accessory, which creates a retro look that’s going nowhere fast! Debbie produces some of the best birdcage veils but also some beautiful accessories that we will showcase here. In the meantime…
Birdcage Veil History
Birdcage veils have a rich history, dating back to the early 1900s when they were first introduced as a fashion accessory. They became popular during World War II when brides opted for smaller weddings and more practical attire. The birdcage veil was a perfect fit for this trend because it was simple, elegant and easy to wear. In the 1950s and 60s, birdcage veils evolved to become even more glamorous. They were often paired with pillbox hats or fascinators and worn by Hollywood starlets like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. This era saw an increase in the popularity of the French netting used in many birdcage veils.
Today, birdcage veils are still popular among brides who want a vintage or retro look or simply don’t want to go for a full-on veil but like the demure look of one.

In the Net
There are various types of netting used for birdcage veils that give them different looks and textures. French netting is a classic choice that has been used since the mid-20th century. It has a hexagonal pattern that gives it a soft and delicate appearance. Russian netting, on the other hand, has larger diamond-shaped holes that make it look more opaque than French netting. It is stiffer than French netting but still lightweight enough to be comfortable to wear.
Another type of netting used for birdcage veils is English netting which has smaller diamond-shaped holes than Russian netting but larger than French netting. It is softer than Russian netting but stiffer than French netting giving it an airy feel while still being opaque enough to provide some coverage.

Pairing Up
Pairing a birdcage veil with the right wedding dress can be tricky, but it’s all about finding the perfect balance between vintage and modern. If you’re going for a vintage look, consider pairing your birdcage veil with a tea-length or knee-length dress. A 1950s-style ball gown with a full skirt also pairs well with this type of veil.
For brides who want to incorporate a birdcage veil into a more modern look, consider pairing it with a simple, streamlined gown. A sheath or mermaid-style dress can provide the perfect contrast to the retro feel of the veil. Alternatively, if you’re wearing a more traditional gown, try adding some vintage-inspired accessories like gloves or jewellery to tie everything together.
It’s important to keep in mind that the length and style of your veil should complement your overall bridal look. For instance, if you’re going for an ethereal bohemian vibe, consider pairing your birdcage veil with loose waves and floral accents in your hair. On the other hand, if you’re aiming for an edgier look, try styling your hair in an updo or slicked-back ponytail.
Ultimately, when it comes to pairing a birdcage veil with different styles of wedding dresses, there are no hard and fast rules. The key is to experiment until you find the right combination that makes you feel confident and beautiful on your special day.

Famous Birdcage Brides
Many famous brides have chosen to wear birdcage veils on their wedding day. One of the most iconic examples is Kate Moss, who wore a delicate ivory birdcage veil with crystal embellishments over her loose waves at her bohemian-inspired wedding in 2011.
Anne Hathaway chose a statement-making headpiece for her big day – a dramatic lace-trimmed veil that covered her face until she made her grand entrance at the ceremony.
Birdcage veils can be so versatile in style, and will work with most wedding-day looks. From delicate crystal embellishments to dramatic lace trims, birdcage veils can add a touch of elegance and glamour to any wedding day look.
