Armani & Ben, Mallorca

Destination Wedding: Armani + Ben

We catch up with beautiful bride Armani, who low-level stalked her dream wedding dress until she found it, right in the middle of Essex at Abigail’s Collection in Colchester. Armani married Ben in magical Mallorca, nearly without their wedding rings! Read their story…

How did you meet, and when?

We met at school in 2008 when I joined in year 10. We were in the same friendship group but not very close and never dated over the years until 2020 when out for a friend’s birthday. We chatted and Ben mentioned going for a drink to which I replied: ‘What? Me and you?’ and we left it at that until lockdown hit. A few weeks in, Ben super-liked me on Tinder, which I found hilarious, screen shot it and sent it to him on Instagram. We chatted for a few weeks until restrictions lifted when we finally ‘met’ for our first date. We have been inseparable ever since and neither of us can believe how we have never considered each other before. Timing is everything!

How many dresses did you try on before you found the one?

Mum and I went to eight shops and tried on around seven dresses in each. I knew exactly what I was looking for but couldn’t find anything in any of the shops I visited.

What made your one your ONE?

I wanted something that wasn’t stereotypically bridal, no lace, satin or crepe but with some kind of overskirt for the ceremony that could be removed for our evening event and it was proving to be very tricky! I knew I was looking for something that felt young and fun but also classy and fitted our evening wedding with black-tie theme. I’d seen that Abigail’s Collection were hosting an Eva Lendel trunk show and after looking at the range of dresses, I knew Perla was a serious contender… I had to try her on!

My Maid of Honour and mum both came with me when I finally found Abigail’s Collection, I tried on a variety of Eva Lendel dresses but none of them were Perla – the one I wanted. Because of the war in the Ukraine, Perla hadn’t made it into the range but she was due to arrive in a few weeks. I waited for her to arrive, mum and I rushed straight in as soon as she was there! The stylist had me try on a few more dresses but Perla wasn’t in the mix, she was saving the best til last. After feeling down in the dumps yet again after my 9th dress appointment, Perla was brought in from the back having been hidden, she was keeping the best til last! I tried my hardest not to look as she was getting me into the gown and attached the overskirt. I hadn’t even looked but I knew this was it, I had found MY dress! I was crying before the curtain had even opened to show mum, the curtains opened and she knew too. She knew by my silence behind the curtain that I was wearing my dress.

The skirt was from another Eva Lendel dress and with the addition of a pearl veil, it was everything I had dreamed of and more… The hunt was over and I had found my dress!

Was there a theme or colour scheme for your wedding?

Our ceremony was at 6pm so we opted for a black-tie themed wedding to ensure our guests dressed for an evening wedding and they really pulled it off! All décor, flowers, and tableware were in white, gold and black, which really added to the theme.

How did you decorate your venue?

Our venue was decorated by Enesencia Decora and wow, the absolute dream team. Son Marroig is a museum during the day and the entire outside area is empty, which gave them the perfect blank canvas to work with. Helena at Enesencia Decora and I spoke for months about everything, I sent her my ideas, colour scheme, theme etc and she provided a full proposal with different options, a bit of a shopping list, of how she had interpreted my vision of the day.

What were your best decisions for the wedding?

Marrying abroad was definitely the best decision. It was a tricky one knowing our family and friends would have quite a price tag to pay but they all had an amazing time, all together, enjoying dinners out, pool days with the babies and just quality time in the sun! Also, having a smaller intimate was just perfect. We’d dreamed of the big church UK wedding but what we had in Mallorca at Son Marroig could not have been better, it really was a once-in-a-lifetime event for us, our family and our amazing friends.

What were your favourite moments?

Getting ready with my girls, seeing my dad for our first look, the car journey from the villa to the venue with my dad, seeing Ben for the first time, the speeches, the incredible meal, the dancing… Everything to be honest!

Any funny things happen? Embarrassing moments?

NO RINGS! Our best man hadn’t quite realised his role as ring holder! I packed Ben’s bag the day before for him to stay elsewhere the night before the wedding, this bag included everything he needed for the big day, including the rings. A car collected my dad from the boys’ hotel and brought him to the villa, he was meant to pop all their belongings inside however, the villa had been locked as we were all leaving for the venue. The bags were all put back into the boot of the car and we’d planned to unpack everything at the venue. When I got out of the car, I was greeted by our celebrant Ulf who informed me there were no rings – they were in the bags at the villa. In all the excitement of getting down the aisle to Ben, Dad and I hadn’t registered that the bags were actually with us in the car, which at the point of remembering had already driven away. We borrowed two rings, my mum’s wedding ring and Ben’s brother in-law’s. Just as the ceremony was about to end and Ulf announce us as husband and wife, our wedding planner came running down the aisle with OUR RINGS! The driver had remembered the belongings in the boot and had driven back to deliver them. Our amazing planner thought quickly, searched through everything and found them. We all laughed, went back to mid-way through our ceremony, did the ring blessing as planned where the rings were passed to all of our guests for them to bless and finally Ulf announced us as husband and wife!

Did you follow all the traditions?

Absolutely all traditions were followed! We stayed apart the night before, I had something old, new, borrowed and blue, and even wore my mum’s sixpence from her wedding day in my shoe.

What were the challenges of planning and organising the wedding?

I thoroughly enjoyed planning and organising the wedding, it was tricky trying to balance the time planning needed around general life but we all enter marriage planning to only do it once so I wanted to enjoy the process and take it all in.

Any regrets? Anything you would have done differently, or included with hindsight?

Absolutely no regrets, nothing we’d do differently and no hindsight. The wedding exceeded our expectations, and we are beyond thankful to all planners, suppliers, family and friends, without everyone’s support it would not have been the day that it was.

What advice do you have for other brides?

Everything about the day and any events leading up to or after are your memories, your photos, your style and your decisions. Enjoy it, take everything in, do it YOUR way… it’s your day, no one else’s. If it’s perfect for you two then it’s your perfect day!
