Wedding Dress Shopping – Busting the Myths

Finding the perfect wedding dress doesn’t have to be a daunting task, nor does it have to break the bank. With the right approach, your wedding dress shopping experience can be positive, enjoyable, and cost-effective. First, we feel we must bust a few wedding dress-shopping myths…

Myth #1: You have to bring an entourage While it’s certainly fun to bring along your closest friends and family members, you don’t need a large group to find your dream dress. In fact, too many opinions can sometimes make the process more confusing and overwhelming.

Myth #2: You have to cry when you find the right dress Everyone will tell you that you will burst into tears when you find your dream dress, but this is a myth perpetuated by TV shows and movies. Not everyone has a tearful reaction to finding their perfect dress. Some brides may feel more excited or relieved than emotional.

Myth #3: You have to spend a fortune on your dress While it’s true that designer wedding dresses can be expensive, and we definitely don’t think you should scrimp on such an important purchase, there are plenty of options at every price point. Don’t feel like you have to blow your budget in order to find a beautiful dress that makes you feel confident and happy.

Myth #4: You have to start shopping a year in advance While it’s a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to find the right dress, you don’t necessarily need a full year. Many brides successfully find their dress within six months or less.

Myth #5: It’s all glamour While you will have the time of your life, you will probably feel slightly awkward, even if that’s because you simply haven’t ever worn anything like a wedding dress, and also it’s a time of intense concentration, emotion and decision making!

Myth #6: You have to know what you want before you go It can be impossible to know what’s going to suit you, what you will like in the flesh and what feels most comfortable. By all means pick a style but be prepared to change your mind. Also, bear in mind that the stylists in a boutique know what gowns they have and what will suit you best.

Myth #7: Alterations are included in the price of the gown This almost certainly isn’t the case, though many good boutiques have in-house seamstresses and will be able to quote you on the alterations. Better still, they will have a rate card so that you will know exactly how much it will cost to have your dress fit like a glove.

Myth #8: You can change your mind after you have ordered your dress No, this is not true. Once the dress has been ordered and you have paid your deposit, you have committed to paying in full for it when it appears. The boutique will have paid out to the designers of the dress and they will not be able to sell that dress on again. It’s good idea to stop looking as soon as you have found your one!

Myth 9: You should wear the exact shoes you are wearing to your wedding to your appointments Not true! The only time you will need them is for your fitting or final appointment so that the hem length can be adjusted and made perfect according to your taste and height.

Myth 10: You should sleep on it This is probably the biggest myth of all! YOU SHOULD NOT SLEEP ON YOUR DECISION! Once you leave the store, you lose the emotional attachment to the dress and forget how you felt while you were wearing it. Go with your heart! (A very important thing when it comes to weddings!)
