If you’re thinking sun, sea and sand for your big day, you will need a fabulous wedding dress that’s both beautiful and comfortable to wear on the beach. A destination wedding brings with it dress challenges you may not have thought of. Here we chat to some of our favourite wedding fashion experts about overcoming them.

Rob Pearce, from Creatiques Couture says:

“We have many brides getting married abroad. We always advise that they think carefully about the weight and size of the gown because it has to be transported in a medium cabin case. We offer a boxing service in-store specifically for destination weddings to make sure your dress can be transported overseas safely”

Rebecca Baddeley, TDR Bridal Says:

“When you’re wedding dress shopping for a wedding abroad, while ultimately it’s how you feel in a dress that counts, you do have some important things to consider before you make your final choice.

Shop for lightweight dresses that are not too heavy so that you can wear your dress all day and throughout the evening without feeling the need to change. Interestingly, not all chiffon, floaty dresses, are the lightest to wear and in fact, some chiffons, while looking floaty, can be heavier than some laces on the market. Avoid dresses with too many layers, too. Or, if you’ve fallen in love with a dress that has a lot of layers, check with the seamstress to see if you can lose a couple, just to make the dress lighter and easier to wear.

Go for some fun, detachable elements, like off-the-shoulder sleeves or an overskirt – something that you can take off if you become too warm.  You can also find wedding dresses with a detachable train extension, like Pearl By Enzoani, so you can have a beautiful, dramatic long train for the ceremony and then a shorter, more manageable train for the rest of your day. You can opt for low backs and sexy silhouettes too, or relaxed casual boho vibes giving your day a dreamy ambience. You could even go the whole Made In Chelsea vibe like Sophie Habboo, now Sophie Laing, in one of our exclusive short dresses, coming soon!

Always check that your dress is suitable (small enough) to be packed in a flight box, to avoid putting your dress in the hold. Your chosen venue should have facilities to steam your dress to eliminate any last-minute pesky creases, if not you can look at one of the hand-held steamers from Propress because these always come in useful. Think about your footwear too as high heels and sand simply don’t work! Opt for a flat sandal or even funky flip flops, or maybe a block heel to finish your look. www.tdr-bridal.co.uk

Bridal Designer Kate Beaumont says:

“Separates are a great option for versatility and because they are generally lightweight. I’d go for a super-simple but oh-so-luxe slip dress like Cosmos and pair it with a lace top and cape or veil. Pure silk is the perfect choice for a beach wedding dress as it’s so breathable as a natural fibre.”

“What menswear is being ordered for beach weddings? This can be anything from linen trousers to a cotton suit, lightweight coloured shirts with no neckwear to a recently made full-blown made-to-measure white suit – we made matching trousers for his groomsmen. Of course, weddings abroad can be ‘smaller’ which in itself creates a different vibe than a traditional English wedding.

Smaller weddings, especially in sunnier climes are very often more casual. Still, they can also create their own challenges, so we suggest finding the perfect supplier and outfit as early as possible. Your look does depend on logistics and budget. Logistics being that hire charges can be prohibitive given the length of time hired items so you may have to buy. Being in England, finding the sort of items that suit that abroad vibe can be very tricky. Lightweight light-coloured suits, trousers and so on can be limited. Certainly, the quality can be interesting given the types of fabrics in question.”
