How to choose your wedding jewellery

wedding jewellery - Andrea Henderson

So, you’ve chosen your dress and it’s on order at the boutique. Now it’s time to start think about your wedding jewellery. From statement earrings to tennis bracelets and classic pearls, you might think you know what you want, but just as with the dress style, you never know what will work until you start trying. It is often said that jewellery and accessories make the dress belong to a bride, and if that is the case, you will want to be extra keen to get it right.

We have teamed up with top wedding jewellery designer Andrea Henderson to help you find the wedding jewellery that suits you best and complements your wedding day style.

Wedding Jewellery Trends
Andrea Henderson: “I’m always following trends to see what looks are emerging, however, my pieces are very timeless as they are mostly inspired by nature and light so can complement many looks.”

So if you’re going to go with what’s en vogue, what should you look for? Andrea: “Florals are still big news and I’m seeing more statement gowns with more significant and more dramatic embellishments. Also, lots more colour. Generally, more personality coming through so that brides can really feel themselves and find a look that’s totally theirs.”

Innovation in Wedding Jewellery

As well as producing timeless pieces, which can be cherished and admired forever, Andrea has been working with liquid acrylic which can be seen in her Patia designs: “It’s such a versatile medium and allows an absolute freedom of creativity with shape and colour. A number of my new designs are created using this technique. I love working with colour and this allows me to hand paint designs and offer even greater individuality to my clients.”

Old School Pieces

At one time in the 1990s and early 2000s tiaras were huge – in every way – a popular choice for brides. Tiaras, crowns and coronets. Andrea’s take on this: “When I think back to the number of tiaras I was making in the early 2000s, I laugh as I can’t really see brides wearing them now. However, there are some crystal and diamanté headband style pieces that still sell well and suit many of the popular hairstyles today.”

A Few of my Favourite Things

Every wedding jewellery designer has a favourite collection, and Andrea is no exception: “I love my clay flowers and particularly love the Hydrangea collection, especially the pins. They can be worn in so many ways. 10 brides could wear the same set and still create ten unique looks.”

Matching Styling and Setting

While your wedding jewellery should match your personality and ultimately complement your dress, the setting of your wedding is important, too. Here are Andrea’s recommendations for…

A Beach Wedding

“I love colour in a beach wedding and semi-precious stones like aquamarine, for example. It’s a more sophisticated approach to shells!”

A Church or Classic British Wedding

Andrea: “I recommend a headpiece that you see most of the detail from the back, or one that wraps through the back of the hair. This style pins in beautifully to buns, chignons and side sweeps and has a romantic and elegant feel. Complementing understated earrings add the finishing touch.”

Second Look or Party Dress

Andrea: “I’d go for either a stylish halo-style headband covered in sparkle or statement earrings, or both!”
