Q: I am totally overwhelmed with wedding plans and I feel like everyone else is more excited about it than I am. Do you think it’s OK to go wedding dress shopping on my own to gather my thoughts and without all the opinions and ‘advice’?

Faye, by DM

A: “Some brides prefer to do this and this is totally fine but sometimes a bride can underestimate just how emotional finding your dress can be. Choose one person who knows you and understands you who will help and support you rather than give opinions or advice. It’s totally OK not to be as excited as everyone around you.

For some brides it can be very overwhelming and daunting to not only plan the largest event you ever have, with those you love most at the heart of it (including your wedding dress shopping!). At the back of your mind, you know you are going to be the centre of attention on that day, it’s a big thing and even the best of us can be overwhelmed by it all at times.

My advice would be to do your homework on the shop you are going to visit, ensure that their ethos is what you’re looking for and that they have enough of the styles you are drawn to, to make sure you only need to visit one shop. Then you should book in – during the day in the week is always quieter – and take your time.

Most good bridal shops will make an appointment for you to show friends and family your choice after you have purchased, so you can always share your dress with them later.”

wedding worries
Q: We plan to marry in Cyprus in 2025, having previously abandoned our wedding plans in 2021 because of Covid. I had already been wedding dress shopping and the ones that suit me are old fashioned ballgown-style dresses, which won’t work for a hot-weather wedding. What can I do?!

Julianna, by email

A: Rebecca Baddeley replies: “When you go wedding dress shopping, it is like no other clothes shopping you will ever do. While there are factors to consider if you’re getting married abroad, this list of idealisms shouldn’t hold you back from having the dress that mirrors your heart.

You know when we’re all listing the ideal attributes our lifelong partner should have? Tall, blonde, great physique etc – we are adamant that these attributes are a ‘must have’ for us to find the perfect person. And then the person we find may only have one, or even none, of the things we had on our list? Well, wedding dress shopping is the same! The list and the ideals you have become irrelevant when you find your dress, just like your partner.

You can look at lightweight fabrics like chiffon and tulle that may be cooler to wear in warmer climates. But ultimately, if you can’t find the dress for you in that genre, just follow your heart. Remember, this dress reflects you and your love for another human being, it has to be right and come from your heart. And just so you know, ball gowns are not old-fashioned and are having a huge comeback in the UK!”

Q: I have too many bridesmaids! I got carried away on a night out and I have no idea how I’m going to afford all of the dresses, for starters, that’s not even to start on inviting their partners, and my growing guest list. They’re all so excited! Help!

A: “It’s wonderful that you have so many people around you who are excited about your wedding! So I would arrange a coffee party, maybe at your home, to discuss your plans and your vision for your bridesmaids.

At your rendezvous, you can explain just how dear they all are to you and how you really want them all involved in some way. Explain that funds are limited and ask them if they would be willing to contribute towards their dress/hair/makeup. If this is something they go for, let them choose the style of dress, and you choose the colour. Also, please don’t get too hung up on their hairstyle choice or make-up, unless of course, it’s extreme.

For friends whose partners you’ve not yet met, maybe organise a few evenings out to get to know them, or, if you prefer you can invite them to the evening rather than the day and just explain to your friends that your funds just don’t stretch that far.

Ultimately, those who love you and just want you to be happy, will support you no matter what, so always keep this in mind if ever things get tricky.”

Q: My friend has dyed her hair a shade of bright orange and it doesn’t work for my wedding! Can I say something, and if so, what?

Becky, by email

A: “Being honest is the only way. Have a conversation with her to let her know your colour theme. Explain that it’s not only your colour theme you’re thinking of but actually her! The last thing you want for her is for her hair to clash with the colour scheme and for her to look silly on the day.

Always try to come from a place of kindness and understanding too, this will help diffuse what could be a really tricky conversation. If she just won’t budge, then maybe she’s not the friend you thought she was. Sadly, when it comes to weddings, the true strength of friendship is something a bride learns quickly. Hold to you closely, those that really, truly support you on your special day, they are few and truly precious.”
