An unconventional wedding with a black wedding dress and Doc’s!
Skyelar, 24, and her husband Colton swapped a big, traditional white wedding for an alternative, unconventional wedding with a goth theme! Reflecting on their day from tying the knot on Halloween in a black vintage wedding dress, a black bouquet and wearing bespoke Dr. Martens boots.
We hear from footwear brand Dr. Martens who spoke exclusively to Skyelar to find out why more brides are saying ‘I do’ to alternative weddings.
The bride explains: “I chose an unconventional wedding because I really wanted something different from the norm. I’ve always loved darker fashion and spookier trends so it felt natural to me to choose a darker, moodier, almost goth-style wedding. I love the colour black in general and I didn’t see many black wedding dresses at the time and I thought it would be so cool to do something super different!”
“I always knew I wanted an alternative feel for the wedding and I had already picked out a black wedding dress, so it only made sense to wear my favourite Dr. Martens platform boots!
Since receiving my first pair of patent yellow Dr. Martens from my mom back when I was in 7th grade, Dr. Martens have been a staple in my wardrobe and my favourite shoe brand! I feel like it matched all of our wedding decor vibes completely, even my bouquet!”
Comfort and style allowed Skyelar to rock and roll as she got married: “My adorable husband encouraged me to wear my Doc’s and told me it would be so cute. They were way more comfortable than any other shoes I had considered wearing so it worked out perfectly to go in my Doc’s!”
It wasn’t just Skyelar who wore Doc’s. Her husband and bridesmaid also chose the iconic footwear: “My husband wore the 1461 Mono Smooth leather Oxford shoes and my bridesmaid, Kerrie, wore the Jadon platform boots! My mom and I picked out burgundy ribbon as well as black lace to use in place of shoelaces to match the theme and colours of the wedding.
My dress also had a slit in the side allowing people to see the shoes more easily, and with the custom ribbon and lace shoelaces we used, it was such a cute touch!”
If you’re considering an alternative wedding, Skyelar has some tips: “My advice to couples considering making unconventional choices for their wedding would be to do whatever is going to make YOU and your partner happiest. Most people aren’t going to remember your day the way that you are. You want those memories to be full of happy choices you made for you and no one else.”
“I’m so grateful I can say that we didn’t encounter any challenges or concerns when choosing non-traditional footwear. All of our family and friends were so supportive and really not surprised at all with the general theme of the wedding and what we chose to wear! My husband is actually the one that encouraged us both to wear Doc’s over the heels I had picked out prior!”
