Bridal Buzz Godmother

Should I try on dresses NOW!?

Fairygodmother Abi Neil

Our new Bridal Buzz Godmother Abi Neill from Abigail’s Collection in Essex, addresses that common desire to try on dresses NOW!

Q: I haven’t set a date yet, but I am desperate to start trying on dresses Rebecca, Kent

A: I hear ya, sister! And oh my, it’s soooo exciting when you become an official ‘fiancé’. Congrats by the way! I know some of you will want to race to your nearest bridal boutique and dive, face first, into glorious rails of ivory and bridal bling! But hold up Girls… as one of your Bridal Buzz Godmothers empowered to guide and protect you during this absolutely gorgeous journey, I need to share a thing or two, so pull up a chair, beautiful; I’ll pour you some bubbles and let’s chat it through …

As a boutique owner of 18 years, I realise some of you could be dreading wedding dress shopping (another chat for another day), but these words are really for those of you whose plan it is to start trying on before your wedding date is set (bad plan) or if it’s more than 20 months or two years away and you’re keen to start trying on (another poop plan).

If you’re already thinking ‘Listen here Bridal Buzz Goddie, I’ll go and try some gowns now, get a good idea first and then I’ll go shopping seriously later when I’ll be ready to find the one then’ – well, I am sorry to burst the bridal bubble Girls, but I promise you in many cases you are not in control of when you find the one and this will likely happen in your first or second shop.

I’ll cut to the chase.  Trying wedding dresses on too soon can lead to too-many-dress-itus! That’s inflammation of the dress shopping experience, causing over-excitement, a potential of too many dresses, and increased confusion, followed by anxiety, low mood and frequent headaches, which makes the decision-making process feel complex and heightens stress! There are several other things that can cause unwanted wedding dress stress, too, and we’ll help you understand those next time.

Another reason why bridal dress shopping too soon is not advised is that boutiques have an influx of new styles throughout the year, plus several discontinuations, which essentially means styles are cut from designer collections too!  This means if you fall in love with something now and haven’t got your wedding date booked (and understandably wouldn’t dream of ordering yet), it can feel super worrying, and you could find yourself under pressure to order in case it gets discontinued and, as per the start of this little chat, if you’re not in the bridal headspace of ‘ready to find the one’ you’ll probably end up in the anxious ‘OMG what if it’s not available in a year zone’ and feeling like ‘this is all happening too soon for me – yikes, I can’t order yet’.

Are you with me now?  So the best time to start looking is when you feel you’d be okay to commit IF you fall in love, and only after you’ve booked your actual venue and date too.  12-18 months is an ideal timeframe, but don’t stress at all if you have less.  Reputable boutiques can meet your needs quickly and will work to your timeframe.  We at our Essex boutique will deffo wave our wedding wand where needed (as can many fab bridal boutiques), so don’t worry but don’t invite extra potential stress and confusion by rushing at it all too fast!  Take your time and be patient. You’ve got this …

Over and out this time with love from Bridal Buzz Godmother Abi Neill.
