The Buzz Guide to Wedding Singers

Playing such an important role on your big day… Wedding singers help to create a magical and unforgettable occasion for everyone, curating the perfect musical experience that goes hand in hand with your wedding theme that you will cherish forever.

There are many many types of wedding singers out there, all of whom have the power to control the tone of your wedding; the mood of the day. But is social media now making it much easier for us to ‘try before we buy?!’

Wedding singers have taken to TikTok to share their talent and memorable moments, using the hashtag #weddingsinger to accumulate over 148.2 million views. Their performances, captured in videos, leave viewers in awe and provide a glimpse of the incredible experience they can bring to your special day.

We spoke to two talented wedding singers who have amassed thousands of views on TikTok, to gain insight into what it’s like to be a wedding singer and share some invaluable tips on how to work with them, to ensure your special day is unforgettable.

First up, TikTok star Germaine Murray @germainemurraymusic

Germaine’s singing career took off in 2014 when she began performing for family and friends at weddings. Over time, her portfolio expanded as she received from couples who cherished her performances on their special day, and her growth on social media. Based in Kent, and with over 2,100 followers and travelling all over the country, creating memories for couples to last a lifetime, Germaine talks about her experience in the industry and what makes her the happiest:

“Letting your guests pick a set list tailored to them creates the most unique experience as no two weddings are ever the same. Couples have special songs and families all like different things and have different vibes. Some are lively and want to dance non-stop, and some who are more relaxed and want a more mellow atmosphere. I sing a lot of soul and Motown, but soul classics and ballads are go-tos for any wedding. What makes me happiest is probably seeing the bride, groom and their guests get emotional during special moments like the aisle song, exit song or their first dance.”

While the wedding day can start wonderfully, it also carries significant pressure to guarantee that everything runs flawlessly for the couple’s once-in-a-lifetime event.

Next up, Amber Prothero @amberprothero

Amber started singing at weddings at about 16 years of age and has nearly completed 10 years in the industry. It started as just a way to make money but now has evolved into her career. With 43.8K followers on TikTok and two sold-out headline shows at the O2 Academy Islington and The Camden Assembly, this talented pop/soul artist talks about the responsibilities that come with her career:

“There is a huge pressure associated with singing at someone’s wedding. A wedding is (for some people) the most anticipated moment of their lives, so understandably, you want to do a good job. I put pressure on myself to do well and to make my couples happy with my performance. Without a doubt though, it is the most rewarding thing when my couples tell me how grateful they are to have me there. Sometimes (not always) they’ll say, ‘Oh that made me cry’, which is always meant in an endearing way and I love that! I always joke that if I haven’t made at least one person cry, then I haven’t done a good job!”

“I think organisation and communication is the key to success with weddings. As a weddig singer, you have to be prepared to be flexible, depending on the couple and their wishes. For example, some brides are totally laid back and want you to decide the song choices. Others have a clearer vision of what they want and so will be a lot more specific. If you are flexible, you’ll make the day more memorable and have a happy client!”

Social Media is a good place to start searching for your wedding singer. Those who don’t have blogs or websites or even Instagram will almost certainly have Facebook and TikTok accounts. And what with TikTok ruling the airwaves in this domain, it might be time to sign up to that!
