Do you have to prepare a speech for an upcoming wedding? Whether you’re one of the lucky ones getting married, a bridesmaid, the best man, the father of the bride or the ex who wasn’t really invited, throwing in a few jokes is the best way to stand out. If you want to increase your likeability and make people remember you, read on.

“But I’m not funny”, you might object. Or maybe you’re funny socially but you have no idea how to write jokes.

Okay, then I’ll teach you. You won’t suddenly turn into a comedy genius, but you’d be surprised how much you can learn with just a few tips and without having to resort to any complex joke-writing science!

So here are 6 professional comedy writing techniques you can use to turn your average monologue into a kick-ass speech instead of being like any other boring person who sounds like they’re reluctantly hosting a karaoke night at a Greggs.

And yes, you can be funny and tell an emotional childhood story that makes people cry. It doesn’t have to be all silly!

1. Blow it out of proportion

Hyperbole is something a lot of people use in everyday life. “It’s been a million years”, “this thing weighs a ton”, etc. When being more intentional about it, you can use exaggeration to be funny.

For example: “A lot of people wonder how the groom managed to get such an amazing wife. Yes, a lot of people wonder that. Well, it’s simple. He just had to be kind, and respectful, and travel to Geneva to find the particle accelerator so he could tear the fabric of the universe and change the nature of reality so it would be possible for a guy like him to seduce her.”

2. Make fun of yourself first

A wedding speech is the perfect time for a roast (maybe check in with the groom before you tell everyone about his fetishes), but you’ll get bonus points if you first show that you can also make fun of yourself. It makes people think “Oh cool, this person has flaws like me and they’re brave enough to be open about them”, and it gives you a pass to be “mean” to others.

3. Compare two very different things

This pairs well with the “blow it out of proportion” tip. One way to do this is when you’re being self-deprecating or roasting someone.

For example: “What a joy to be here today at this perfect wedding. Beautiful setup… very well organised… everything is in order… to celebrate the wedding of a man who hasn’t made his bed since he was 7 and sniffs his socks to check whether he can wear them.”

4.The rule of 3

This is the easiest way to write a joke, and once you notice it, you’ll see it everywhere. Simply list three things and make the third one something unexpected.

Let’s say you’re the groom: “I feel incredibly lucky. I can’t believe I get to marry the woman of my dreams and celebrate it with the people I love the most: My parents, my sister, and (points to best man) the guy who promised me it would be ‘awesome’ to get a burrito tattoo on my butt when I was too drunk to say no.”

5. State the truth

Sometimes, all you need to be funny is to state the truth when it’s not expected. And if that truth is about yourself, it’s a way to connect with the crowd with self-deprecation as explained earlier.

For example: “I’m honoured to be the groom’s fourth-best choice as his best man… It’s such a pleasure to spend thousands of pounds to travel halfway across the world and get severely jet-lagged to give a 4-minute speech no one will remember.”

6. Reference something specific about the wedding

When you make a reference that people understand, it instantly creates a bond with them, especially if it’s something that you have in common. One way to do this is simply to make a reference to a specific character trait from the groom or the bride. People will think “Oh hey that’s so true!”
But it doesn’t have to be a reference to an individual. You could point something out about the venue, the family, or the context surrounding the wedding.

For example, let’s say you’re at an Indian wedding, or a wedding from any culture that’s known for their extended families and inviting all of them: “Tonight I think we’re about 800 people. Wow. I’m surprised you guys only invited your immediate family. Only 800?”

So, did this make you feel ready to charm the audience?
